The Road Less Travelled
You may be accustomed to finding our traditional line, priced to be affordable to the middle class. We would love to be making it and also to be teaching others how to make our line but, alas, we do not currently have a production and training studio. To raise funds for a studio we are putting our vintage collection of rare, one of a kind and original design prototypes on the market. To learn more, follow our blog, Andersen Studio Evolution Diaries. We love this process and are committed to seeing it continue for the benefit of future makers.
This Vase is a variation on a plain vase of similar form designed by Weston in 1982, the date which is carved into the bottom of the vase. Sometime around 2005, Weston created this variation with diagonal ribs around the vase. It appears that the ribs would have been carved into the mold but the whereabouts of such a mold is unknown to date. Weston decorated the vase in an abstract design his inimitable hand in wax over a soft cornflower blue gray glaze, which was then dipped in the matte white glaze, designed by Weston. The vase is cast in red stoneware using a clay body recipe designed by Weston. The vase is 6 inches tall and about 4 5 inches wide.
This Vase is an original one of a kind object created by Weston Neil Andersen.
Andersen Design is an American Designer Craftsmen Studio established by Weston and Brenda Andersen in 1952 on Southport Island, Maine, USA. The studio was started with a philosophy of creating hand crafted products affordable to the middle class. Andersen Design remained an American made ceramic studio when most of the western ceramic industry moved production to foreign labor markets and competed successfully in a market flooded with foreign made imports, producing a hand-made art product affordable to the middle class. Andersen Design stands as a singular American original design company taking the road less travelled during an era of global transformation.
